This beautiful song was written by a woman in Mexico, in about 1938. Take a nostalgic and historic look at one of the most popular songs in the U.S. and elsewhere during the 40s and 50s.
Enjoy clips of recordings, videos, and a movie. Appreciate how the song has become politicized in the past few years in relation to immigration at our southern border. Stay until the end to hear about the hilarious scandal in Brazil.

Lindajoy Fenley, a journalist who has lived and worked in Spain, Mexico and Central America for over 22 years, is fascinated by the stories behind the songs she listens to in Spanish. While she has worked with musicians from around the world, she has a special interest in the music of Mexico. As founder of a non-profit organization in Mexico City, she organized international music festivals from 1996 to 2005. She is currently working on a master's degree in Spanish at Sonoma State University.
